I also can't get JJazzlab (4.0.2) to make sound with FluidSynth on either Ubuntu Studio (23.10) or on AVLinux (latest version as of yesterday, running as Live install on a USB-C SSD). But if I de-select "Use FluidSynth" and select "Java Synth (Gervill)", then the sound comes right up on the laptop speakers and through the headphone jack. So far I haven't been able to get it to output through the USB audio interface (M-Audio Fast Track Ultra), and I suspect that's because I don't know how to configure the Pipewire routing. But that's another issue for another day. My first install of JJazzlab was in January this year, version 4.0.1, downloading the file and using command "sudo apt-get install ./jjazzlab_4.0.1-1_amd64.deb" as described on the website. Then when I couldn't get any sound I uninstalled that package and installed JJL through the Synaptic package manager, but had the same results with no sound through FluidSynth. Then, uninstalled JJL and Fluidsynth, and installed Fluidsynth by itself (using Synaptic) before installing JJL again (Synaptic). Still not a peep from FluidSynth. Then recently (yesterday), I downloaded JJL 4.0.2 and tried the whole routine all over, uninstalling and fresh installing using "apt get-install . . . ", Synaptic, installing FluidSynth first, and even trying the Ubuntu Studio built-in package manager "Discover". And still no sound from FluidSynth, but at least the Java Synth (Gervill) works. FWIW, I can dual-boot into Win10 and JJL seems to run just fine with no muss, no fuss.
