I really badly want to use JjazzLab, but I'm failing to install all the stuff I need in advance.
Since there are so many troubles with the dependencies, I'm not giving you decent logs, because I don't even know where the problem is.
But please let me know what logs or system information you need!
Before running JjazzLab, I need Fluidsynth (downloaded as told).
For Fluidsynth I seem to need JACK (there was half a sentence on that, and it seems to make sense, using MIDI) (installed JACK as ubuntuusers.de recommends).
Now it seems I cannot get all of them them to work together:
When I followed the Jjazzlab instructions to add virmidi, I typed/copy-pasted exactly what they say, but my system does not add virmidi as device "-1" but as "0", like this:
~$ aconnect -lo
client 14: 'Midi Through' [type=Kernel]
0 'Midi Through Port-0'
client 16: 'Virtual Raw MIDI 0-0' [type=Kernel,card=0]
0 'VirMIDI 0-0
Edit: I've also tried the non-permanent virmidi, and it seems it never creates any real virmidi.
I've now come as far as running qsynth (assuming I can run JACK with the default sound card, since I'll choose virmidi later), and then run JJazzLab - and JJazzLab does not find any Output virmidi.
Input virmidi 0,0,1; no output at all.
- End of Edit.
alsa shows virmidi as "usbstream output" device, for everything else the default soundcard is the device.
When I try to run Fluidsynth (as Jjazzlab say in their instruction), qsynth does not find JACK ("jack server is not running or cannot be started").
But alsa -a says that jack is there (since I installed it).
When I try to set up JACK via its GUI, I don't know what I'm doing, plus when I try to start it manually (trying both standard soundcard or virmidy as soundcard device), I get an error message:
D-BUS: Could not start JACK server
So, somehow things are there, but they do not run at all.
Please can anyone give me a step-by step-instruction how to get this running?
I'm und Ubuntu focal, 20.04, so it is pretty new, and I have a choice between multiple JACK packages. The one I installed is not from the official focal repos, but I thought it might be the latest one.
Help would be really appreciated!!
