In my guitar corner I use daily Jjazzlab connected to the small THR (aux input) on which I plug my guitar. The amp is great:
- excellent sound (which can be very powerful!)
- tiny, light
- nomadic" because it can work on battery
It has only one big defect: in "nomad" mode it works on 8 AA batteries, but Yamaha does not specify which ones - Alkaline - Ni-Mh - Rechargeable ?
- The Alkaline ones work perfectly for about 4-6 hours, but they are expensive and not eco-friendly.
- Ni-Mh last a little longer
- Rechargeable Ni-Mh last longer but are still more expensive...
PLUS they limit the volume to 50%!!! beyond that the sound drops out suddenly and without warning.
I found on the net a good number of guitarists who were as annoyed as I was.
While pushing my reflexions and my investigations I noted that :
- the transformer of the THR delivered 15v.
- alkaline batteries 1.5v x 8 = 12v
- rechargeable batteries 1.2v x 8 = 9.2v (!!!)
So I oriented my search on constant 1.5v AA batteries and I found the AA Li-Ion which guarantee 1.5v CONSTANT, new generation batteries. And it works! This is the EBL charger from the Chinese manufacturer that comes with 8 Li-Ion 1.5v batteries that you can find at the biggest online seller. I just bought it. The price of the charger + batteries set of 49 Euros may seem high but it allows me to walk around, play outdoors, go to my rehearsals without having to look for a power outlet and carry the THR charger or an extension cord.
Attention: only the EBL charger works with these newly designed batteries. But it is tiny, discreet and weighs only a few grams. If it keeps its promises in terms of charging time, I will even buy a second one to have a second set in reserve. For me it's worth it.
I hope that this information will be useful to the owners of one of these excellent THR amps and that Jérôme will forgive me for this little involuntary ad.
